Select whether to scan inbound and/or outbound emails using this Virus Scanning Engine.Ĭheck this option to scan incoming emails.Ĭheck this option to scan outgoing emails.Select the Enable Gateway Scanning (SMTP) check box to scan emails using this Virus Scanning Engine.Go to Email Security > Virus Scanning Engines > Kaspersky. The Kaspersky license needs be acquired separately from the GFI MailEssentials license.Įmails found containing virus during a scan are handled according to the action set for the engine that detected the virus. I'd like to do all anti-virus related tasks at a gateway, but we'll see about that.GFI MailEssentials uses Kasperky antivirus to scan inbound, outbound and internal email for viruses. Good product though - and anything I can do to ease the load on the Exchange server is good for me. So, I'm guessing it does it - but behind the scenes. Supposedly it does some realtime interfacing with ORDB but there's nothing in the interface that mentions anything about it. The MailSecurity would be nice - hopefully I'll look into that in the near future. As for now, ME7 is working well and I'm going to keep it around. It's not near as robust as what you get with ME7 so I decided to stick with ME7 for now. So, you have to load all the information in there that you want to filter for by hand - or you can import from a text file if someone is kind enough to send you one - or you keep one handy that you add to.You have to be careful about how much to add as you don't want to start blocking legitimate emails - so there is a delicate balance.I was hoping to use Nortons Gateway as an additional anti-virus line of defence but it wants to run on port 25 as well. The one disadvantage is that the anti-spam filters come empty. SMTPSVC 5.0 is pretty good with dealing with the open relay stuff out of the box. Makes it a little easier to deal with the open relay issue. I also like seperating the Exchange server from the SMTP server. Much easier than going into Exchange's IMC and trying to fiddle around in there. I also like the real time monitoring screen which allows for very smooth troubleshooting of SMTP and mail related issues. I just have MailEssentials.I like the spam blocking feature and it appears to work very well. As Unload mentioned, the MailEssentials and MailSecurity are 2 discrete products now. The last server you want going down is the mail server. My impressions right off the bat are good for ME7.

I wrote and sheduled a batch file to reboot the machine every night just to 'clean out the cobwebs'.

I've been messing with ME7 for a week or so now and like what I've been seeing so far.Despite the SMTP server failing to accept connections for some odd reason the other night everything has went off without a hitch.
